Directions
From Santa
Fe (I-25):
From St. Francis/285, take I-25 North (towards Las Vegas, Denver) 57.6
miles to “Romeroville/Santa Rosa” exit #339; turn right onto
US-84/historic Route 66 South and go approximately 23 miles to NM-451;
From
Albuquerque (I-40):
Take I-40 east (97.2 miles from I-25) to US-84 North, exit number 256,
toward Las Vegas; go about 18 miles to NM-451 West; (You could, and
normally would, come in from 119 at Delia if coming from Albuquerque,
but it's harder to find the turn off).
These are the signs on 84 showing the
turn to 451.

Turn and cross the cattle guard.
You're now in open range - beware of wandering cows, horses.

Go about 2.5 miles, down the hill, some
hairpin turns (slow down)...

At the T, turn left.

In about 100 yards, you'll see...

Go around, down and over the arroyo, up
the hill, past La Loma Road...

And after about a mile from where you
turned only 119 from 451, you'll come to El Llano Loop, which cuts off
on about a 45 degree angle...

Past Mariposa Rd...

Past Palmilla Rd...

You'll see the acequia (irrigation ditch
on join the road on the right (as of 3/20/08 it's off and dry for annual
cleaning)...

Then around a 90 degree turn to the
left... There will be fence on both sides...

This gate on the right...

This house on the left...

Then the fence will end on the right, and
the property starts immediately after. Also, road changes from OK
pavement to almost gravel...

Wide plank bridge (looks like maybe a
horse has stepped on one of the planks and it needs to be put back in
place, so careful crossing.

Open the gate (chain comes off) and close
after you. Go on down, and down, and down. The property is
about 3/4 of a mile long. At the bottom of the fields is a fence
line. To the right is the cliff and river. One can scale
down the cliff to the right of the fence, or cross the fence (no gate)
and go down the slope. You'll get to another fence, and if you
cross it or follow it all the way down to the left to the river, you can
get back into the bottom couple of acres that's down almost at the level
of the river. It's well worth going all the way down to the end.
Look for large metal poles that show the side lines of the property (as
surveyed). The river hooks to the left and marks the lower end of
the property. There's a "beach" down there, a great swimming hole,
and the lower part has a whole different feeling from the middle and the
top, as well as totally different plant species, etc.
Enjoy.
